Trauma Protection for Soft Ballistics in the SAPI Cut

The Zentauron Heavy Trauma Protection is worn against the body behind suitable soft ballistic protection in a plate carrier or protective vest. It is designed for first responders, military and law enforcement personnel, as well as other users of ballistic protection systems.

Upon impact, the soft ballistic protection can deform toward the body from the rear. The trauma protection inserted behind the soft ballistic protection serves to distribute the force transmitted to the body over a larger area and to reduce the trauma caused by the impact.

The trauma protection inserts are supplied as a pair and are available in the SAPI Cut in sizes SAPI M and SAPI L.

Application Behind Soft Ballistics

The trauma protection is inserted on the body side behind the soft ballistic protection. The recommended sequence is:

Outer layer → Soft ballistics → Trauma protection → Body

The inserts are suitable for plate carriers and protective vests whose ballistic insert pockets are designed for the corresponding SAPI size as well as for the additional material thickness.

Material and Construction

The trauma protection consists of a compressed aramid laminate. The multi-layered construction serves to distribute the stress occurring behind the soft ballistic protection over a larger area and to reduce localized stress on the body.

With a material thickness of approximately 8 mm, the trauma protection is additionally inserted into the ballistic insert compartment behind the appropriate soft ballistic protection.

Comparative Test with the SAPI Cut VPAM 3 Plus Soft Ballistic Protection

In a comparative test, the combination of the Zentauron Heavy Trauma Protection and the Zentauron SAPI Cut VPAM 3 Plus soft ballistic protection was examined. The rear penetration depth into plastilin was compared with and without the additional trauma protection.

• Soft Ballistic SAPI Cut VPAM 3 Plus with heavy trauma protection: 14 mm penetration depth into the plastilin

In this comparative setup, the measured penetration depth was reduced from 28 mm to 14 mm by the additional trauma protection inserted on the body side behind the soft ballistics.

The measured values provided refer exclusively to the combination tested—consisting of the Zentauron heavy trauma protection and the Zentauron soft ballistics SAPI Cut VPAM 3 Plus—as well as to the specific test setup used. The results cannot be automatically applied to other soft ballistics or protection systems.

Not standalone ballistic protection

The trauma protection does not provide ballistic protection on its own. It is intended exclusively as a supplementary insert behind a suitable soft ballistic insert.

The insert does not replace either a ballistics-tested soft ballistic insert or a hard ballistic plate. The trauma protection does not have its own ballistic protection class and does not automatically increase or alter the protection class of the soft ballistic insert used.

Before making a selection, you must verify which SAPI size is intended for the plate carrier, the protective vest, and the existing soft body armor. Additionally, there must be sufficient space in the insert compartment for the combination of soft body armor and trauma protection.
