M.A.R.S. Combat Backpack – Modular 30-Liter Tactical Backpack

The Zentauron M.A.R.S. Combat Backpack —Modular Assault Backpack Standard—is a modular 30-liter combat backpack designed for personal gear, operational equipment, and communications gear. As a tactical operational backpack, it combines a compact main compartment with extensive MOLLE/PALS webbing, a special internal load-securing system, and a stowable carrying system.

A particularly notable feature is the ability to organize different types of equipment both inside and outside the backpack. A separate insert compartment with four securing straps was designed, among other things, for larger radios. Additional MOLLE pouches, an optional back panel reinforcement, a hydration bladder, and externally mounted gear expand the M.A.R.S.’s range of uses.

The backpack measures approximately 30 × 20 × 50 cm, has a capacity of about 30 liters, weighs approximately 980 g, and is made of durable Cordura® polyamide 6.6.

30-liter storage capacity and internal organization

The main compartment, with a capacity of about 30 liters, provides space for personal gear, operational equipment, and other necessary items.

In the upper section of the inside front panel, there is a permanently sewn-in mesh pocket with a zipper. It measures approximately 22 × 17 cm and is suitable for smaller or flat items of gear that need to be stored separately from the rest of the contents.

The mesh pocket is positioned so that, depending on the load, it can rest on top of the gear in the main compartment. This keeps it easily accessible even when the backpack is full.

Compartment for radios and secured gear

On the inside of the back panel, there is a separate insert compartment for larger pieces of gear.

This design was developed, among other things, for larger radios such as the SEM 70 and devices from the PRC series. The compartment can also be used for other gear that needs to be organized and carried close to the body inside the backpack.

A total of four tie-down straps are available to secure the contents:

• two straps in the upper section
• two straps in the middle section

This allows the gear to be securely positioned within the backpack and kept closer to the back. This is particularly helpful for controlled load management when carrying heavier communication or operational equipment.

Mount for back reinforcement or hydration bladder

Directly on the back panel is a separate, Velcro-fastening mount for the optional back panel reinforcement.

The compatible M.A.R.S. backpack back panel stabilizes the backpack and creates a firm barrier between the back and the contents. This prevents hard or sharp pieces of gear from pressing directly against the back.

Alternatively, this area can be used to accommodate a hydration bladder with a capacity of up to approximately 3 liters. The hose can be routed through one of the openings in the lid.

MOLLE Backpack with Extensive Expansion Options

The M.A.R.S. is designed as a modular, expandable MOLLE backpack and offers large attachment surfaces for additional pouches and compatible gear.

The front features 8 × 8 MOLLE/PALS mounting points.

Additional MOLLE panels are located on both sides:

• 4 × 4 MOLLE at the bottom on each side
• 4 × 2 MOLLE on each side at the top

This allows the combat backpack to be expanded with side pouches, multi-purpose pouches, or other MOLLE/PALS-compatible accessories, depending on the mission profile.

One suitable addition, for example, is the 8-liter combat pouch. It can be attached to the side of the M.A.R.S. and increases the available storage space for additional gear.

There is also a 5 × 10 cm patch area on the front for attaching insignia and patches.

Four side compression straps with strap adjusters

There are two compression straps on each side of the backpack. This provides a total of four side compression and securing straps.

The straps allow you to compress the pack’s volume and keep the load more compact. Equipment carried or mounted on the sides can be secured further.

In addition, the straps can be used to further secure the M.A.R.S., for example, to a larger backpack or when transporting it in a vehicle.

Each tie-down strap features a strap retainer. Excess strap material is bundled and secured with it, so that no long, loose ends hang from the backpack.

Bottom loops for a sleeping pad and additional gear

There are a total of four strap loops on the bottom of the M.A.R.S.—two in the front and two in the back. Each loop is approximately 5 to 6 cm long.

With suitable straps, additional gear can be attached to these loops underneath the backpack. This includes, for example, a sleeping pad; other suitable items of gear can also be carried on the outside.

Two ports for antennas, cables, or a hydration tube

There are two closable grommets on the backpack’s lid.

Each grommet has a small pull tab and closes with Velcro. Beneath each one is an opening approximately 4 cm in diameter.

These openings can be used, for example, to route:

• radio antennas
• Cables
• hoses from a hydration system

In the center of the lid is a sturdy webbing carry handle that allows the M.A.R.S. to be quickly picked up and handled.

Flat carrying system with lightly padded shoulder straps

The carrying system consists of lightly padded, ergonomically shaped shoulder straps. They start at a width of about 7 cm at the top of the shoulders and taper downward to approximately 5 cm.

The M.A.R.S. is thus deliberately designed without a bulky trekking carrying system. The comparatively flat construction is tailored for operational use and for carrying in conjunction with other equipment.

A 20-mm-wide chest strap connects the shoulder straps and is adjustable for width.

A 25 mm wide, removable waist belt is located in the lower back area. Sturdy buckles are used for the connections of the carrying system.

Additionally, a vertical webbing strip with four compartments is sewn onto the center of the back.

Split back panel for use with a protective vest

The back panel features padded Cordura sections on the left and right sides. An unpadded vertical channel runs between these two padded zones.

The split padding is designed for use of the combat backpack in conjunction with a protective vest.

If the M.A.R.S. is worn without a protective vest, a clear channel remains along the back between the side padding sections. As a result, not the entire back of the backpack lies flat against the body.

Stowable carrying system and additional rear pocket

The rear pocket is open at the bottom on both the left and right sides.

Shoulder straps and the waist belt can be stowed inside. This is particularly useful when transporting the backpack in a vehicle or on a pallet: loose straps are kept out of the way and are less likely to get caught on other equipment or vehicle parts.

The pocket also serves a second purpose. It can be used to store wide and flat pieces of gear.

This means the rear section is not merely a component of the carrying system but also offers an additional way to organize flat gear.
