Data sheet
The IR reflective patch set of 2 consists of two compact identification patches measuring 2.5 × 2.5 cm. Lauat product purpose, it is used for recognition in the dark in conjunction with a night vision device and is intended to help prevent confusion ("friendly fire").
Also searched for as: IR patch, IR marker or infrared patch for marking under night vision.
The set is aimed at users who use equipment with hook and loop surfaces and want to implement clear marking in low-light/night vision situations - for example:
The back is equipped with hook and loop fasteners. This allows the patches to be attached to suitable Velcro surfaces (loop/fleece) - e.g. on protective vests, plate carriers or helmet covers.
NIR (near infrared) plays a role in the tactical context because night vision technology does not evaluate "colors" as during the day, but how strongly materials reflect light in the (near) infrared range. Depending on the material, coloring and surface treatment, equipment can appear conspicuously bright or inconspicuously dark under NVG - even if it appears similar in daylight.
Important in practice: Visibility under night vision is caused by residual light (e.g. moon/stars) or by additional IR illumination. An IR reflective patch is a deliberate marking - it is not about camouflage, but about identification/recognition in low-light situations.
What is an IR marker patch?
An IR marker patch (also IR patch/infrared patch) is a marking that is used for detection/identification in low-light conditions in conjunction with night vision technology.
How do you attach an IR patch to a helmet or plate carrier?
Via the hook and loop surface: This patch has hook and loop on the back and is attached to suitable hook and loop surfaces on the helmet cover, plate carrier or vest.
