Data sheet
The ARES SET fragmentation protection system is designed for users who require lightweight and easy-to-move fragmentation protection in a plate carrier or protective vest setup. The focus is on splinters and secondary fragments that can occur in dynamic operational situations. The insert is thin, light and flexible and supports a clean wearing comfort without unnecessarily restricting mobility on duty.
The splinter protection performance is designed in accordance with STANAG 2920. STANAG 2920 is a NATO test standard for splinter protection. It is tested with a fragment simulation bullet, FSP for short, in this case with a mass of 1.1 grams. The V50 value serves as the characteristic value: V50 describes the speed at which, statistically speaking, half of the hits penetrate and half are stopped in the test. The ARES SET shatter protection achieves a V50 of at least 446 m/s.
Twaron is used as the protective material. Twaron is an aramid, i.e. a high-strength fiber that is used for ballistic applications because it can absorb energy and distribute it in the material composite. In practice, this supports a reliable protective effect against fragments, while the insert remains flexible at the same time. The version is designed for a thickness of 3 mm and has a basis weight of 1.8 kg per square meter. The warranty is 5 years and is manufactured Made in Germany.
Important for classification: Ballistic protection reduces risks, but does not completely prevent injuries. Even if a fragment is stopped, residual energy can act as trauma to the body and cause injuries.
The ARES SET fragmentation protection is intended for the torso area and supports the protection of vital regions in the chest and back area. In the front, this can cover the area of the heart, lungs and large blood vessels in particular; in the back, it can also cover the spine and adjacent structures. The specific coverage depends on the cut of the carrier and the fit of the inserts in the respective system.
The following applies for proper use: Only wear the insoles in a suitable vest cover or carrier cover. They cannot be used properly without a cover. The secure fit may be affected when used in third-party sleeves, for example due to different pocket dimensions or a different installation angle.
Always wear ballistics with the hit side, i.e. strike face, facing outwards. The strike face points towards the outer shell, away from the body. If the strike side is marked, follow the Strike Face marking.
If there is no marking, the following applies: Strike face is the side without technical data or manufacturer information printed on it. The side with technical data is always the reverse side and must be worn facing the body. When fitting, make sure that the insert sits completely in the pocket and is not folded or twisted.
If soiled, clean the insert with a damp cloth. The welded TPU film prevents UV radiation and moisture from penetrating the aramid package. Do not use any chemical cleaning agents, as these can attack the TPU film and impair the performance of the aramid.
The ARES SET shatter protection is intended for use in a suitable carrier system, especially in the context of a plate carrier setup. If you require tested soft ballistics against threats from handguns and submachine guns instead of fragmentation protection, you will find the soft ballistics ARES VPAM 3 Plus SET as an alternative.
