The splinter protection insert "Splinter protection plate carrier side" is designed for lateral protection on the plate carrier and supplements the protection concept in the area of the cummerbund or lateral insertion compartments. Thanks to its thin, lightweight and flexible design, the insert can be practically integrated into the existing carrying equipment without unnecessarily restricting mobility.
Important: The insert must only be worn in a suitable vest cover or carrying cover. It cannot be used properly without a suitable cover. If other sleeves are used, this may affect the secure fit.
If a soft ballistic solution for handgun threats is sought instead of fragmentation protection, the VPAM 3 Plus soft ballistic insert may be relevant for the side as a supplementary option.
The protective performance of this insert is designed as splinter protection in accordance with STANAG 2920. STANAG 2920 is a NATO test standard for fragmentation protection. It is tested with a fragment simulation bullet (FSP); here with 1.1 g FSP. The protection performance is described by the characteristic value V50, which indicates the speed at which, statistically speaking, half of the fragments penetrate and the other half are stopped. For this insert, the V50 value is at least 446 m/s.
The material used is aramid-based Twaron. Aramid is a high-strength fiber that is used in soft ballistic packages to bind fragments and absorb energy. The inlay is designed for a low installation height and achieves a thickness of 3 mm with a weight per unit area of 1.8 kg per square meter. The guarantee is 5 years. The production is Made in Germany.
Ballistic protection reduces the risk, but does not completely prevent injuries. Even when fragments are stopped, residual energy can act as trauma on the body and cause injuries. A trauma protection insert (optional) can be useful for additional cushioning.
The insert is intended for the lateral torso area as covered by side panels or the cummerbund of a plate carrier. This area includes ribs, soft tissue and parts of the laterally adjacent organs. The additional side protection can help to reduce the risk of splinters and secondary fragments in the flank area, especially if the front and back protection are already covered by plates or other protective components.
Always wear ballistics with the strike face facing outwards, i.e. towards the outer shell. The strike side is either marked directly as "Strike Face" or, if unmarked, Strike Face is the side without any technical data or manufacturer information printed on it.
The side with technical data is always the back and must be worn facing the body. When fitting, make sure that the insert is fully seated in the insertion compartment and is not twisted. Only use the insert in a suitable vest cover or carrying cover to ensure a stable fit.
If soiled, clean the insert with a damp cloth. A welded TPU film prevents UV radiation and moisture from penetrating the aramid package.
Do not use any chemical cleaning agents, as these can attack the TPU film and impair the performance of the aramid.
The anti-splinter insert is designed for side pockets on plate carriers and body armor, such as those often found in cummerbunds or side panel solutions. It is crucial that the cover securely accommodates the shape and dimensions of the insert. The secure fit can be affected by wearing covers from other manufacturers, which is why the fit and fixation must always be checked after insertion.
Note: This product has been specially designed for use by armed forces or law enforcement agencies.
